I have to say there really is nothing quite like live music. But when that music happens to come from a band with as much soul and passion as The Appleseed Collective, it can turn into something truly awe-inspiring. This String-Swing band from Ann Arbor, Michigan uses soulful music combined with instruments you’d most likely find in the bluegrass genre to bring out the sheer excitement of 20s and 30s style sound. But to simply label them as bluegrass would both be wrong and somewhat insulting to their prowess.
I went to my favorite bar in San Antonio (502 Bar) expecting to hear a fun local band to sit and relax to. What I received was something much more. I have seen bands that are passionate and good performers, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of people so completely in love with music. That may not be saying much as I have only been witness to a handful of bands. But I would like to believe that as a performer myself, I am astute enough to tell when a person loves their craft.
The absolute musical genius with which this band performs is something to behold. Just watching the group of men for a few songs, it is easy to see how in tune they are with one another while being able to add their instruments’ own unique voice to the ensemble. Their unity is not where their talent stops. Most bands and musical artists don’t have the kind of creative process that can lead to such remarkable storytelling as this band does.
I have to say many bands that do musical breaks tend to become tedious and repetitive, but that is definitely not the case when it comes to The Appleseed Collective. Their musical breaks can be compared to that of a symphony with how well the music itself is written and improvised. Their solos are an example of how connected the members of the group really are. Instead of using their solos as a way to show off their individual talents selfishly, they showcase what they can do while still creating an ensemble sound.
Overall, this band has allowed me to experience something amazing. Their passion and love for what they do is contagious and beautiful. There are so many things in this world that can bring a person down, and it is increasingly difficult to find something worthwhile. But The Appleseed Collective certainly has the ability to remind people that there is more than indifference and apathy in the world, and if given the chance people can begin to see the creative beauty that lies all around us.
